GENEVA, Ohio – Sophomore Frances Dowd and redshirt senior Ryan Witt each set the school record and won the 600 meter run as the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams competed on day one of the SPIRE Division I Collegiate Invitational at the SPIRE Institute Indoor Track & Field Facility on Friday evening.
Dowd ran a winning time of 1:30.99 in the women's 600 meters, bettering Asia Washington's 2009 record of 1:31.84. Witt won the men's 600 meters in time of 1:19.24, surpassing Nick McLaughlin's record of 1:19.88, set last year.
Freshman Amanda Smith also turned in a strong performance in the women's 600 meters, finishing third overall in a personal best 1:32.64, good for third all-time at Tech In addition, sophomore Shaowei Tu was sixth in the men's race in 1:21.22.
In the men's 1000 meters, senior Chris Walizer finished third overall in a personal best 2:24.68 and redshirt freshman Grant Pollock was fifth in 2:26.19. Walizer's time ranks third all-time in the Tech record books and Pollock's fifth. Also, redshirt senior Eddie Judge was eighth overall in 2:26.94.
Sophomore Scott Campbell competed on day one of the seven-event heptathlon and stands in fourth place with 2,583 points through four events. Campbell began the day by running a time of 7.16 in the 60 meter dash, good for 826 points. He tied for the best mark in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, six and three quarter inches (6.57m) and earned 713 points. Campbell then set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 31-9.5 (9.69m), which earned him 467 points. In the final event of the day, Campbell posted a mark of 5-8.5 (1.74m) in the high jump, good for 577 points. Tomorrow, he will compete in the final three events of the heptathlon: the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000 meters.
Tech returns to action tomorrow at SPIRE as field events begin at 10 a.m., with running events starting at 10:30 a.m.
