GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech junior All-American Ronnie Black (Newport News, Va.) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Track & Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday. It marks the first time in his career that Black has earned the weekly honor from the conference.
On Saturday, Black won the high jump at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a school record and personal best mark of 7-3.25 (2.22m). In the process, Black beat one of the oldest records in Tech track history as Steve Whaley’s mark of 7-1 (2.16m) was set in 1983. His previous indoor PR in the high jump was 6-10.75 (2.10m) and he now holds both the indoor and outdoor high jump (7-1.5, 2.17m) school records. His mark of 7-3.25 currently ranks tied for fifth nationally.
Last outdoor season, Black finished seventh in the high jump at the NCAA Championship to earn his first career All-America honor.
Black and the rest of the Hokies return to action this Friday and Saturday as they host the Hokie Invitational at Rector Field House.
