DAEGU, SOUTH KOREA – Virginia Tech senior All-American thrower Marcel Lomnicky (Nitra, Slovakia) finished 11th in his flight in the qualifying round of the hammer throw competition today, but did not advance to the final, at the IAAF World Track & Field Championships at Daegu Stadium.
Lomnicky recorded his best mark on his first attempt, as he threw the hammer 238 feet, five inches (72.68m). His second throw was 234-4 (71.44m) and his final attempt was 236-9 (72.16m). Lomnicky placed 21st overall in qualifying among the 35 competitors. Japan’s Koji Murofushi won the flight and had the best overall qualifying mark with a throw of 257-9 (78.56m).
A three-time All-American in the hammer and five-time All-American overall, Lomnicky placed second at the NCAA Championship (237-4, 72.35m) and won this third straight ACC hammer title this past outdoor season while setting the ACC all-time record (248-10, 75.84m) in the process. He was the 2009 NCAA national champion in the hammer. Earlier this month, Lomnicky placed second in the hammer (242-5, 73.90m) at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. He now turns his attention to training for his final season of indoor track & field at Virginia Tech.
In addition, former Virginia Tech track & field athlete and three-time NCAA Champion Queen Harrison is competing at the World Championships. Harrison will represent the United States and compete in the 400m hurdles, which begin on Monday, Aug. 29 with preliminary heats.
