GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech men’s track & field team was well represented on the 2011 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic men’s track & field team as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
Hunter Hall (Sr., Fort Wayne, Ind.), Rene Strauss (So., Winterlingen, Germany), Matthias Treff (Jr., Burgthann, Germany) and Alexander Ziegler (So., Dischingen, Germany) were all named to the academic squad. Hall, Treff and Ziegler were named to the team for the second time, while Strauss is a first-time honoree.
Hall, a communications major, earned second team All-American honors at the NCAA Championships with an 11th-place finish (17-2.5/5.25m). He won seven pole vault competitions during the season, including a tie for first at the NCAA East Regional. Hall posted a personal-best (17.8.5/5.40m) at the Sea Ray Relays. During the indoor season, Hall earned another All-America honor placing sixth at the NCAA Championships and was third at the ACC Championships.
Strauss, a sociology major, placed fifth in the ACC Outdoor Championships high jump competition (6-9.5/2.07m) and sixth in the javelin (195-8/59.65m). He was fourth in ACC Indoor Championships heptathlon (5,282 points) and seventh in the high jump (6-8.75/2.05m). He won the heptathlon shot put at the ACC Championships (45-4.5/13.83m).
Treff, a industrial systems engineering major, set a new school and all-time ACC record in the javelin (255-6/77.88m) as the runner-up at the NCAA Championships, earning his first All-America honor. He earlier won his second ACC javelin title with a throw of 239-6/73.01m.
Ziegler, a management major and the 2010 ACC Male Field Performer of the Year, won the national title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on his final toss, a season-best 238-6 (72.69m). He has earned All-America honors four times and was one of only two competitors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, along with teammate Marcel Lomincky, to throw past 70 meters all season. During the indoor season, Ziegler earned his second-consecutive ACC weigh throw title (70-4.5/21.45m).
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
