2011 All-ACC Academic Women's Track & Field team announced
Phillips, Woodford selected for honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two members of the Virginia Tech women’s track & field team were selected to the 2011 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Women’s track & field team as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford. Clemson senior Liane Weber was named the ACC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year and highlights the 2011 All-ACC Academic Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Team, which includes 22 All-ACC honorees.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

Kelly Phillips (r-Sr., Blacksburg, Va.) has been selected to the All-ACC Academic team for the four times and recently was named to the named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Cross Country First Team. Phillips was the winner of the Elite 88 award at the NCAA Indoor National Championships which recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reach the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

Phillips is a two-time ACC indoor pole vault champion as is the recipient of the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan graduate scholarship. The co-president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, she was selected to the All-ACC Academic team for the fourth time. She posted a season-best 12-11.75 (3.96m) in winning the Liberty Twilight women’s pole vault competition. Phillips qualified for the NCAA East Regional finishing 13th 12-7.5 (3.83). During the indoor season, Phillips was a second team All-American after placing ninth at the national meet. She won the ACC Indoor Championships after setting a new school record two weeks earlier at the VT Elite Meet of 14-1.25 (4.30m).

Natalie Woodford (So., Roanoke, Va.) was a member of the 1,600m relay (3:37.57) team that qualified for the NCAA East Regional and also set personal records in the 400m dash (55.81) and 400m hurdles (1:05.09) during the outdoor season. She ran the lead leg on the school record-setting 1,600m indoor relay team at the ACC Championships (3:38.16) and set personal-bests in the 200m (25.82) and 400m (55.89) events.

Also highlighting this year’s team are six four-time All-ACC Academic Team honorees, including Caitlin Bailey of Boston College, Kim Williams of Florida State, Joanna Wright of Georgia Tech, Gabby Gioia of North Carolina, Ayla Smith of Virginia and Kelly Phillips of Virginia Tech. Williams and Phillips represented the ACC as members of the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America First Team. Five more student-athletes garnered the third accolade of their career, including Caroline King of Boston College, Patricia Mamona and Kim Ruck of Clemson, Miranda Wilson of Miami and Ashley Verplank of North Carolina. An additional eight collected their second honor.
