TOWSON, Md. - Virginia Tech women’s track and field athlete Kelly Phillips has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Cross Country First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Phillips was named to the third team last year.
A Blacksburg, Va., native and a double-major in biology and human nutrition, foods and exercise, Phillips was the winner of the Elite 88 award at the NCAA Indoor National Championships which recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reach the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
Phillips is a two-time ACC indoor pole vault champion as is the recipient of the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan graduate scholarship. The co-president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, she was selected to the All-ACC Academic team for the fourth time.
Phillips posted a season-best 12-11.75 (3.96m) in winning the Liberty Twilight women’s pole vault competition. She qualified for the NCAA East Regional finishing 13th 12-7.5 (3.83). During the indoor season, Phillips was a second team All-American after placing ninth at the national meet. She won the ACC Indoor Championships after setting a new school record two weeks earlier at the VT Elite Meet of 14-1.25 (4.30m).
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
