EUGENE, Ore.-- Virginia Tech’s Taylor Crosson and Courtney Dobbs had strong performances in the women’s junior 5000m and former Tech runner Queen Harrison qualified for women's 400m hurdles finals Friday on the second day of 2011 USA Senior and Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Crosson (Fairfax Station, Va.) posted a personal outdoor best time of 16:57.92 to finish second, barely edging teammate Dobbs (Glenn Allen, Va.) who also had a personal best outdoor performance of 16:58.69. Unfortunately, neither met the Pan Am Junior qualifying standard (16:30).
The USA Junior (19 and under) Championships serve as the selection meet for the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships.
The junior competition is taking place in conjunction with the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The meet is being held through June 26, at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
The 2011 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will select the members of Team USA who will compete in the IAAF World Championships Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea.
Tech’s other freshman in the junior competition, Darrell Wesh (Virginia Beach, Va.), finished fifth in Heat #2 in the men’s 100m in a time of 10.65 and failed to qualify for the finals later in the afternoon.
Former Tech stand-out Queen Harrison finished fourth in the second women’s 400m hurdles semifinal Friday night in 56.86. The 400m hurdles final is slated for Saturday at 5:21 p.m. (ET).
Two other Hokies will see action this weekend. Michael Hammond (Jr., Midlothian, Va.) finished third in his heat in the men’s 1500m to qualify for Saturday’s final at 5:51 p.m (ET). Kelly Phillips (r-Sr., Blacksburg, Va.) will compete in the women’s pole vault competition which will take place on Sunday at 3 p.m. (ET).
