CLEMSON, S.C. – Virginia Tech concluded competition at the Clemson Tiger Qualifier Saturday, despite a long delay due to passing thunderstorms, earning victories in both the men’s and women’s hammer throw, with Marcel Lomnicky setting a new facility record.

Lomnicky’s winning toss of 242-9 (74.00m) breaks the previous record at the Rock Norman Track and Field Complex held by former Hokie Spyridon Jullien of 238-5 (72.67m). Lomnicky led three Hokies as the top three collegiate finishers in the event, followed by Alexander Ziegler in third (226-11, 69.16m) and Denis Mahmic in fifth (203-4, 61.98m). Dorotea Habazin, ranked third nationally, won Saturday’s hammer toss at 222-6 (67.83m), besting the rest of the field by nearly 40 feet.

Funmi Alabi matched her time from yesterday’s prelims in today’s 100-meter dash finals, placing second at 11.58 with Ogechi Nwaneri following in sixth (11.90). Alabi also ran well in the 200-meter dash, placing third at 24.12 with Zakiya Tyson right behind in fourth at 24.33. Alabi, Nwaneri and Tyson teamed up with Ebony Scott in the 400-meter relay, leading the Hokies to a second-place finish (45.01). Natalie Woodford had a collegiate-best performance in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line ninth at 55.81.

Darrell Wesh performed in two events Saturday, placing third in the 100-meter dash finals (10.69) and seventh in the 200-meter dash with a new collegiate-best time of 21.78. Rene Stauss set a new personal best mark in the high jump, taking second place at 6-10.75 (2.10m), which ranks fifth all-time at Tech. David Wilson and Hasheem Halim finished back-to-back in second and third place in the triple jump, with Wilson (51-5.5, 15.68m) just edging out Halim (50-10.75, 15.51m).
