CLEMSON, S.C. – The Hokies ran under the lights, late into the night in Clemson, S.C., at the first day of competition at the Clemson Tiger Qualifier meet. Three earned new collegiate bests and two won their respective events, including Samira Burkhardt who moves to second all-time at Tech in the outdoor shot put.
Burkhardt, who already owns the No. 2 spot on the all-time indoor shot put performance list, moved up the outdoor list with a win Friday at 54-4 (16.56m). This ties Burkhardt with Ciera Ayangbile’s identical PR from 2007, less than one foot shy of the all-time mark of 55-2.75, set by Brittany Pryor in 2007. Funmi Alabi and Ogechi Nwaneri qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash, finishing third (11.58) and seventh (11.67) in Friday’s preliminaries, respectively. Alabi’s time is a new collegiate best, improving on her former best of 11.59 set at this year’s ACC Championships. She ranks fourth all-time at Tech in the event. Also competing in Friday’s preliminaries were Ebony Scott (12th, 11.89) and Zakiya Tyson (17th, 12.05), with Scott earning a new PR. Kristen Brown showed off her versatility, competing in both the 100-meter hurdles (17th, 14.20) and the pole vault (6th, 12-1.5, 3.70m), along with Leigh Allin in the latter (10th, 11-05.75, 3.50m).
Darrell Wesh advances to tomorrow’s 100-meter dash finals, earning a 10.53, eighth-place finish. Hunter Hall led the pack in the men’s pole vault, winning with a height of 17-2.75 (5.25m). Joe Davis took third in the event (16-6.75, 5.05m).
The Hokies continue action tomorrow at a pair of Carolina meets, competing in day two of the Clemson Tiger Qualifier as well as day one in Chapel Hill, N.C., at the Carolina Relays.
