Three men and eight women named from indoor track squad

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its 2011 All-ACC Academic Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field teams Friday. The list includes 11 Hokies, three men and eight women, out of a total of 81 athletes, 38 men and 43 women. Clemson’s Miller Moss and Florida State’s Kim Williams earned the Men’s and Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, respectively.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cummulative average during his or her academic career.

The three men’s honorees are sophomore Ronnie Black, senior Chris Walizer and sophomore Alexander Ziegler. Black and Ziegler were two of 12 student-athletes that also earned indoor All-ACC honors. Black finished third in the high jump at the conference meet (6-10.75, 2.10m) and Ziegler won the weight throw title (70-4.5, 21.45m). This is the first career All-ACC academic honor for Black and Walizer, while this is Ziegler’s second.

Tech’s women’s team has eight honorees, tied for the most from any single ACC institution along with Duke. The eight Hokies are junior Aunye Boone, freshman Samira Burkhardt, sophomore Emma DeJarnette, freshman Courtney Dobbs, senior Ogechi Nwaneri, senior Kelly Phillips, senior Jessica Trapeni and graduate student Asia Washington. Burkhardt, Phillips and Washington are three of 15 that also earned indoor All-ACC honors. Washington placed third in the 400-meter dash (53.75), while Burkhardt and Phillips won titles in the shot put (52-1.25, 15.88m) and pole vault (13-11.25, 4.25m), respectively. Nwaneri is a two-time honoree, Washington is a three-time honoree and Phillips earns her fourth career honor, one of only two four-time honorees on the list.
