BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech men’s track team saw its largest increase in the rankings so far this season, jumping from 14th to No. 7 in the week four USTFCCCA rankings, released Tuesday. The week four rankings typically see the most movement, since it is the first poll that ignores preseason data and focuses solely on this season’s performances. Strong performances at last weekend’s ACC Championships also helped the Hokies move into the top 10, with four ACC champions and 12 All-ACC performers.
Marcel Lomnicky had perhaps the best individual performance of anyone at the ACC Championships, setting a new all-time ACC mark in the hammer throw (248-10, 75.84m) and cementing his No. 1 spot in the nation. Remeniscient of the group’s indoor performance, the Hokies swept the top three spots in the hammer throw, with Alexander Ziegler (236-2, 71.99m) and Denis Mahmic (208-4, 63.51m) finishing right behind Lomnicky. Ziegler’s mark ranks right behind Lomnicky at second in the nation. Other ACC champions this weekend were Hasheem Halim in the triple jump (52-10, 16.10m), Jared Jodon in the pole vault (17-2.75, 5.25m) and Matthias Treff in the javelin (239-6, 73.01m). The men’s team placed second with 153.5 points.
This weekend the Hokies head north to Philadelphia, Pa., for the historic Penn Relays. A handful of others will head to NRV neighbor Radford for the running of the Highlander Invitational.
