DURHAM, N.C. – Virginia Tech began competition Thursday at the 2011 Outdoor ACC Championships, hosted by Duke University. Hokies competed in the decathlon, men’s javelin, and the men’s and women’s 10,000 meters. The highlight of the day was Matthias Treff, winning his second career ACC title in the javelin. With three events scored so far, the men’s team is in fourth place with 15 points, while the women are in ninth place with three points.
In Treff’s first competition of the season, he bested the field with a throw of 239-6 (73.01m) as one of only two competitors to make it past the 70-meter line. This is the junior’s second career ACC title, having won his first during the 2009 season. Rene Stauss added three more points for the team, placing sixth with a best toss of 195-8 (59.65m). Courtney Dobbs scored the first points of the weekend for the women’s team, placing sixth in the 10,000 meters at 35:06.40. Devin Cornwall added two more points to the men’s total to close out the day, placing seventh in the 10,000 meters with a new personal-best 30:11.55.
Freshman Scott Campbell was the Hokies’ lone decathlete, and through five of the 10 events he sits in fifth place with 3,258 points. Campbell finished third in the 100-meter dash (11.17), fifth in the long jump (21-4.75, 6.52m) and 400-meter dash (51.08), and seventh in the shot put (30-9.25, 9.38m) and high jump (5-5.75, 1.67m).
The combined events will resume competition tomorrow at 10 a.m. Field events begin with the women’s shot put at 1 p.m. and the first running event of the day will be the preliminary heats of the women’s 1,500 meters at 4 p.m.
