BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech began weekend action competing in field events at the Spec Towns Invitational. All four field event competitors in Georgia finished fifth or higher.

Hasheem Halim took second in the triple jump, a new outdoor personal-best of 53-2.75 (16.22m) that moves him to second all-time at Virginia Tech and is just shy of the twenty-five-year-old school record of 53-4.5 (16.27m). Dorotea Habazin placed third in Friday’s hammer throw, tossing 214-2 (65.27m). Marcel Lomnicky, who currently leads the nation in the hammer throw, won the event Friday at 232-6 (70.86m), nearly 17 feet further than second place. Denis Mahmic also competed in the hammer throw, placing fifth (197-4, 60.15m).

Events continue tomorrow at the Spec Towns Invitational, as well as the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., and the Track and Field Classic in Lynchburg, Va.
