ATLANTA, Ga. – Despite a rain-shortened day, Virginia Tech completed most of day two’s events at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, winning six events including sweeps of the men’s and women’s 4x1 and the 100-meter dash.
The men’s and women’s relays had yet another successful weekend, with both 400-meter relay squads taking home victories. The women’s team of Ebony Scott, Funmi Alabi, Zakiya Tyson and Ogechi Nwaneri took the title in 45.76, while the men’s squad of David Wilson, Keith Ricks, Darrell Wesh and Ebenezer Amegashie took their race in 40.92, which ranks third all-time at Tech. The Amegashie siblings found individual success in their relays, with Ebenezer earning third place finishes in the men’s 110- (14.77) and 400-meter hurdles (53.24), while Yvonne won the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a new personal-best of 1:00.75 that ranks sixth in the Hokie record books.
Two of the four members of each 4x1 squad saw action in the individual 100-meter dash. Nwaneri led the way for the women at 11.66 with Tyson coming in fifth (12.07). Ricks earned the title on the men’s side (10.50) followed by Wesh in fourth (10.74). Ricks and Wesh paired up again in the 200-meter dash, finishing second (21.14) and ninth (22.13), respectively, with Jonathan McCants in 11th (22.43). McCants finished sixth earlier in the 400-meter dash as well (49.25). Aunye Boone and Alabi earned top-five finishes in the women’s 400-meter dash, with Boone in second (55.57) and Alabi in fourth (56.60).
Tyson led a 2-3-4 finish in the women’s 200-meter dash with a personal-best 24.26, followed by Boone (24.38) and Alabi (24.46). Nwaneri came close to making it four Hokies in a row, but ended up sixth at 24.80. Hokies were scheduled to compete in the 1,600-meter relay at the end of the day, but heavy rain cut the meet short.
In the field events, Hasheem Halim bested the field in the men’s triple jump at 50-8.75 (15.46m). Rene Stauss competed in the men’s shot put, placing fourth (45-3.5, 13.80m). The rain stopped late-finishing field events short as well, with Stauss and Ronnie Black not able to finish the discus and high jump, respectively. Black competed in the 400-meter hurdles earlier in the day, placing fifth with a new personal-best of 54.12.
Virginia Tech spends next weekend at a pair of relay meets, including the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va. and the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.
