Hokies earn two titles in Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Virginia Tech opened its outdoor track and field season at the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami. Many Hokies didn’t waste any time hitting their stride, with victories in both the men’s 200-meter dash and the women’s 400-meter relay.

Keith Ricks came out on top in the men’s 200-meter dash (21.10) to go along with a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash (10.47). Darrell Wesh (10.77) and David Wilson (11.01) weren’t far behind in the 100-meter dash with third and sixth-place finishes, respectively. Jonathan McCants rounded out the sprint events for the Hokies, placing second in the 400-meter dash (48.24) and 10th in the 200-meter dash (21.60). Ebenezer Amegashie earned a pair of strong finishes in the hurdle events, taking fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.50) and second in the 400-meter hurdles (53.82), followed closely by Jeff Artis-Gray (3rd, 54.05) and Ronnie Black (6th, 56.03) in the latter. Artis-Gray showed his versatility by also taking third in the long jump (23-11.5, 7.30m). The men’s 4x4 team also finished strongly, taking second place (3:15.43).

The two women’s relay teams represented the Hokies well Saturday, with the 400-meter relay earning a victory (45.16) and the 1,600-meter relay team placing second (3:46.43). In the 100-meter dash, Ogechi Nwaneri came out in second place (11.73) followed by Ebony Scott (12.02) and Zakiya Tyson (12.15) in sixth and ninth, respectively. Funmi Alabi recorded a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 200- (24.11) and 400-meter dashes (56.07), the former being a new personal best. Rounding out the field in the 200-meter dash were Nwaneri (10th, 24.84), Scott (11th, 24.95), Tyson (13th, 25.11) and Kristen Brown (16th, 25.56). Brown also took seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (14.03). Alabi was the tail-end of a 3-4-5 finish in the 400-meter dash, led by Aunye Boone (3rd, 55.23) and Yvonne Amegashie (4th, 55.71). Natalie Woodford also placed 12th in the event (56.90).

Next week the Hokies will split squads between the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., and the Concord Invitational in Athens, W. Va.
