BLACKSBURG, Va. – Following their performances in last weekend’s NCAA Championships, eight Virginia Tech track and field student-athletes have earned USTFCCCA All-America honors. Hunter Hall, Michael Hammond, Yavgeniy Olhovsky and Alexander Ziegler were named to the first team, while Samira Burkhardt, Hasheem Halim, Marcel Lomnicky and Kelly Phillips were named to the second team. Funmi Alabi and Dorotea Habazin were given honorable mention as well.

These eight All-Americans consist of four automatic qualifiers, seven All-ACC performers, including four ACC champions, and three school-record holders, two of which were set this season.

Tech’s first-team honorees all finished in the top eight in their respective events. Hall and Olhovsky paired up for sixth and eighth-place finishes in the pole vault, each hitting 17-6.5 (5.35m). Hammond advanced past Friday’s prelims in the mile run with the fourth-best time (4:01.11) and placed seventh in Saturday’s finals (4:01.80). Ziegler earned his third-consecutive All-America honor, taking second in the weight throw at 69-9.5 (21.27m).

ACC Champion Phillips finished shy from earning points for the women’s team, placing ninth in the pole vault at 13-5.25 (4.10m). Freshman Samira Burkhardt, who led the ACC all season, took 12th in Saturday’s shot put (54-3.25, 16.54m). All-ACC performer Marcel Lomnicky placed 14th in the weight throw (64-7.25, 19.69m). Halim, who was a late addition to the national field, took 15th in the triple jump (49-7.75, 15.13m).

The Hokies kick off their outdoor season this weekend, heading to Coral Gables, Fla., for the Miami Invitational on Saturday, March 19.
