Olhovsky and Hall earn All-America honors

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Five Virginia Tech student-athletes competed in day one of the NCAA Championships, with the Hokies’ two men’s pole vaulters, Hunter Hall and Yavgeniy Olhovsky, earning All-America honors. Additonally, Michael Hammond will advance to Saturday’s finals in the mile run, posting the fourth-best time in today’s prelims.

Hall tied for sixth in the men’s pole vault (17-6.5, 5.35m) while Olhovsky finished eighth with the same height. This is Hall’s third career All-America honor and Olhovsky’s seventh, having earned one every indoor and outdoor season since 2008. This ties him for the all-time record at Tech with Spyridon Jullien for career All-America honors.

In the women’s weight throw, Dorotea Habazin finished 17th overall throwing 58-1 (17.70m) on her second attempt. Michael Hammond advances to tomorrow’s finals in the mile run after placing fourth in Friday’s prelims at 4:01.11. The finals are set to begin tomorrow at approximately 6:10 p.m. ET. Funmi Alabi placed 20th in Friday’s 60-meter dash prelims (7.47) and will not move on to Saturday’s finals.

In addition to Hammond, five more Hokies will compete on Saturday. Samira Burkhardt kicks things off for Tech in the women’s shot put, set to start at 4:45 p.m. Kelly Phillips, competing in the women’s pole vault, is set to compete shortly after at 5 p.m. Hasheem Halim, who was not in the initial entry field, has been added and will compete in Saturday’s triple jump at 5:30 p.m. Alexander Ziegler and Marcel Lomnicky will wrap things up in the men’s weight throw at 6 p.m.
