BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 2011 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships began Thursday, with the women competing in the pentathlon and the men completing four of the seven heptathlon events.
Sophomore Rene Stauss and freshman Scott Campbell competed in Thursday’s heptathlon and at the end of day one, they sit in second (3,177 points) and seventh place (2,642 points), respectively. They started the day off placing back-to-back in the 60-meter dash, with Campbell in third (7.14), just one-hundreth of a second ahead of Stauss in fourth (7.15). Rene Stauss took second in the mens’ long jump, leaping 23-0 (7.01m) on his second attempt and carried the momentum into a win in the shot put, throwing 45-4.5 (13.83m) in his third and final attempt. Stauss wrapped the day up placing third in a tightly-contested high jump at 6-7 (2.01m).
The Hokies did not have any student-athletes competing in the women’s pentathlon. Maryland senior Kiani Profit came out victorious in the pentathlon (4,250 points) as the first champion crowned this weekend. Maryland and Clemson are currently tied at first in the standings with 10 points.
The meet resumes tomorrow, with the remaining heptathlon events starting at 11 a.m. Field events begin at noon with the men’s high jump and running events start at 2 p.m. with the qualifying round of the women’s mile. The ACC will provide a live stream of tomorrow’s events beginning at 3 p.m. on the championship website here along with live stats and a full recap of the day’s events.
