BLACKSBURG, Va. – Former Tech athlete Queen Harrison has been selected by the Norfolk Sports Club as the recipient of the 47th annual General Douglas MacArthur Memorial Trophy. The award is given each year to the top collegiate athlete in the United States who formerly attended a Virginia high school.
Harrison, who attended Hermitage High School in Henrico, Va., graduated from Tech in 2010 and became the Hokies’ first ever women’s national champion, winning three NCAA titles during the season. She was also the first NCAA athlete to ever sweep both hurdles competitions in the outdoor national meet, taking home titles in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. She also won the Bowerman Award, given to the top male and female track and field athlete each season.
The last Tech athlete to win the MacArthur award was running back Lee Suggs in 2002. Harrison is the first track and field athlete to ever win the award, and only the third female athlete, the last being Mimi Smith in 1998.
The MacArthur award will be presented at the 66th Jamboree of the Norfolk Sports Club on Monday, Feb. 28. Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will be the keynote speaker. The event will be held at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.
