BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech began its 2010-11 indoor season this weekend at the Liberty Kickoff in Lynchburg, Va. The Hokies earned victories in both the men’s and women’s pole vault, with sophomore Emma DeJarnette taking the women’s competition and Jared Jodon, competing unattached, earning the win on the men’s side.
DeJarnette cleared the bar with a best height of 12-1.5 (3.70m). Tech athletes took four of the top six spots, with Leigh Allin placing third (11-9.75, 3.60m), followed by Kristen Brown tying for fourth (11-3.75, 3.45m) and Elizabeth Powell competing unattached placing sixth (10-10, 3.30m).
Jodon edged a lead on the men’s side, earning the win with a height of 16-8.75 (5.10m). Joe Davis finished half a foot shorter at 16-2.75 (4.95m), good for a third place finish. Following Davis was the Hokies’ third athlete in the top four, Matt Hoogland, competing unattached and placing fourth (14-9, 4.50m).
Tech resumes its indoor season after the winter break on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14th and 15th, hosting the Virginia Tech Invitational at Rector Fieldhouse.
