GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three members of the Virginia Tech women’s track & field team were selected to the 2010 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Women’s track & field team as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
Kristy Castlin (Sr, Douglasville, Ga.), Kelly Phillips (r-Jr., Blacksburg, Va.) and Asia Washington (Sr., Piscataway, N.J) were all named to the elite academic squad. Castlin and Washington were named to the team for the fourth time while Phillips is a three-time honoree.
Castlin, a political science major and the 2010 ACC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, concluded her Tech career at the NCAA Championships where she finished fourth in the women’s 100-meter hurdles. Her performance garnered the seventh All-America honor of her career which is a program best, breaking her tie with former Tech thrower Brittany Pryor who claimed six All-America honors throughout her Hokie tenure.
Phillips, a human nutrition, foods and exercise major, last week was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Cross Country Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The human nutrition, foods and exercise major cleared a season-best 13-01.50 in winning the pole vault competition at the Liberty Twilight meet in Lynchburg, Va. Phillips was qualifier for the NCAA East Regionals which were held in Greensboro, N.C.
Washington, a accounting & information systems major and NCAA Regional qualifier, won the 400m hurdles at the Miami Invitational and finished fourth at the ACC Outdoor Championships. She also finished fourth in 400m dash at the Yellow Jacket Invitational.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
