EUGENE, Ore. – The Virginia Tech track and field squads opened the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Finals on Wednesday in Eugene, Ore., as senior Queen Harrison and the women’s 4x100-meter relay unit competed on the day.
Senior Queen Harrison advanced in the women’s 400-meter hurdles to highlight the first day’s competition for the Hokies. Harrison, the top-ranked athlete in the event, clocked a 55.35 in the semifinals to move onto the finals of the 400 hurdles, scheduled to run on Friday. The Richmond, Va., native ran the fastest time in the field.
The women’s 4x100-meter relay squad finished seventh in the first heat and 22nd overall in the semifinals of the event. The quartet of senior Kristi Castlin, freshman Funmi Alabi, sophomore Aunye Boone and sophomore Ogechi Nwaneri crossed the line in 48.62 and did not qualify for the event finals. Castlin, as well as Harrison, will compete in the women’s 100-meter hurdles tomorrow.
Tech will continue action at the NCAA Finals on Thursday, as sophomore Dorotea Habazin competes in the women’s hammer throw, senior Yavgeniy Olhovsky and Jared Jodon will partake in the men’s pole vault and Harrison and Castlin run in the 100-meter hurdles. Habazin kicks off the Hokie action at 6 p.m. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
