Hokie throwers qualify two more for national finals
Harrison qualifies in the women's 400-meter hurdles

GREENSBORO, N.C. The Hokie throwers and senior Queen Harrison continued their stellar 2010 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary Round for the Hokies on the second day of action at the meet on Friday in Greensboro, N.C.

Two more Hokie throwers qualified for the national finals in Eugene, Ore., on June 9-12 on Friday. Junior Dorotea Habazin tossed a 211-11 in the women’s hammer throw qualifying round, the best throw in the prelims, to punch her ticket. Habazin owns a career-best and school-record throw of 218-11 in the event. On the men’s side, senior Igor Misljenovic earned fourth in the men’s shot put qualifying round to earn a bid to the finals out west. The Zagreb, Croatia, native tossed a personal-best 60-04 in the effort. Misljenovic will also compete in the discus tomorrow, scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

Including Habazin and Misljenovic, the Hokie throwers will send five athletes to the nationals. Freshman Alexander Ziegler threw the best mark in the field in the qualifying round of the men’s hammer throw last night, tossing a career-best mark of 234-01. Sophomore Marcel Lomnicky and senior Matej Muza also qualified in the men’s hammer with fourth and 10th-place showings, respectively. Lomnicky threw 221-07, while Muza launched a mark of 205-03.

Senior Queen Harrison earned a trip to Eugene, Ore., in the 400-meter hurdles after placing second overall in the quarterfinals of the event. The Richmond, Va., native, who holds the top time in the country of 54.66, earned a time of 55.07 to win the third heat of the event.

Harrison and Kristi Castlin then finished one-two in the first round of the women’s 100-meter hurdles. Harrison clocked a 12.70, while Castlin crossed the line in 12.87. The duo rank first and second in the race, respectively, in the nation. They will compete in the quarterfinals of the event tomorrow at 7:15 p.m.

In other action, junior Ebenezer Amegashie closed out his 2010 season with the men’s 110-meter hurdles, coming in 31st with a time of 14.34. Sophomore Keith Ricks’ 2010 campaign came to an end, as the Suffolk, Va., native ran 21.57 for 38th place in the men’s 200-meter dash. On the women’s side, sophomore Ogechi Nwaneri took 47th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.70.

The men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechases, scheduled to close out Friday's action, were postponed due to inclement weather. The races will run beginning at 9:30 a.m. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
