ATLANTA, Ga. Junior Dorotea Habazin broke a school record as the men’s and women’s hammer throw crews highlighted the first day of competition for the Virginia Tech track and field squads at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., on Friday.

Habazin, in only her third competition this season, won the women’s hammer throw with a career-best launch of 218-11, defeating the runner-up finisher by over 25 feet. The Zagreb, Croatia, native bettered her own school record in the event, formerly 216-06, which she had previously set last year. The mark also ranks first in the nation coming into the weekend.

On the men’s side, the Hokies finished one-two in the men’s hammer throw. Sophomore Marcel Lomnicky threw a mark of 232-10 to capture the event title, while freshman Alexander Ziegler finished second with a toss of 225-10. Ziegler’s throw shattered his former collegiate best in the event of 207-06.

The throws events continued to produce stellar results for the Hokies, as senior Igor Misljenovic placed second in the men’s shot put. Misljenovic tossed a 57-00.25 en route to his third top-three finish in the shot put this season.

Sophomore Michael Hammond ran a personal-best 3:42.17 to come in second in the men’s 1,500-meters. Hammond lowered his personal record from 3:43.65, achieved at the Jessie Owens Classic on April 30. On the women’s side, sophomore Lauren Lemieux clocked a 4:27.84, a personal best, for ninth place in the 1,500-meters.

To cap the day, freshman Jared Berman took third in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking 9:07.56. Freshman Sammy Dow placed seventh in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:53.45.

Tech will continue at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday. Action at the meet begins at 11 a.m., with the women’s high jump and the women’s pole vault. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
