Dow adds Hokies' third distance title at Jessie Owens Classic
McLaughlin sets personal best in 800-meters

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Hokie distance crew capped off the Jessie Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday in stellar fashion for the Virginia Tech track and field squads, adding another title in the final day of action.

Tech received a strong effort from freshman Sammy Dow in the women’s mile run to begin the day. Dow clocked a 4:58.40 in the race en route to the Hokies’ third distance title of the meet. In the men’s mile, freshman Jared Berman ran a time of 4:13.31 to finish second overall.

In other distance action, junior Nick McLaughlin placed fourth in the men’s 800-meter run with a career-best time of 1:50.36, shattering his former personal-best clocking of 1:51.28.

Last evening, sophomores Will Mulherin and Michael Hammond both captured titles in the men’s 5,000-meters and the men’s 1,500-meters, respectively. Mulherin ran a time of 14:12.33, while Hammond earned a facility record with a personal-best time of 3:43.65.

The Hokies will take next week off before traveling to the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., on May 14-15, and to the North Carolina Elite Meet in Chapel Hill, N.C., on May 16. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
