Field athletes shine at Liberty Twilight
Phillips captures pole vault title for second straight week

LYNCHBURG, Va. The Virginia Tech field athletes shined on Thursday night for the Hokie track and field squads at the Liberty Twilight in Lynchburg, Va., scoring two victories and several other strong performances on the night.

Junior Kelly Phillips captured first place in the women’s pole vault for the second straight week. Phillips, who won the event at the Vertklasse Meet last weekend, cleared 13-01.50 in the winning effort, the top mark for the women’s squad this season. On the men’s side, Hokies finished second, third and fourth in the pole vault competition. Juniors Hunter Hall and Jared Jodon both achieved a height of 16-08.75, with Hall suffering fewer misses to win the tie-breaker for second place, while junior Mike Miller topped a height of 16-02.75 for fourth place.

Freshman David Wilson added another title for the Hokie field corps, placing first in the men’s triple jump. The Danville, Va., native leaped 49-09.00 to notch his second triple jump crown of the season. Wilson currently ranks 16th in the nation in the event, owning a season-best jump of 51-05.50.

In sprints action, senior Kristi Castlin matched her best finish of the season in the 400-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 1:00.84, finishing second overall. Junior Ebenezer Amegashie ran the top time in the prelims of the men’s 110-meter hurdles, and later took third overall in the finals of the race. Amegashie clocked a 14.25 in the prelims, and ran a 14.30 in the finals of the event. Amegashie also came in third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.59.

Other finishers of note on the evening include freshman Yvonne Amegashie, who placed fourth in the women’s 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 24.85, and sophomore Keith Ricks, who finished fifth in the men’s 200-meter dash, running 21.20.

The Hokie throwers and a contingent of distance runners continue action this weekend, competing in the Jessie Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
