PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The women’s shuttle hurdle relay posted a school-record time and three Hokies qualified for their respective event finals to highlight Friday’s action at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
Opening up the day for the Hokies, the women’s shuttle hurdle relay squad quickly got the action started, as the foursome ran a school-record 54.27 in the Championships of America section of the race. The trio of seniors Queen Harrison, Kristi Castlin, Asia Washington, along with sophomore Taylore Williams placed third in the event. Texas A&M, which won the event with a time of 52.50, set a new collegiate and Penn Relays record.
Harrison advanced to the finals in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 12.46. The Richmond, Va., native ran the fastest time in the prelims of the race to qualify for the finals on Saturday. Joining Harrison in the 100-meter hurdles finals will be Castlin, a Douglasville, Ga., native, who won the third heat of the event with a time of 13.00, second-fastest in the field.
Sophomore Keith Ricks clocked a 10.56 in the men’s 100-meter dash in his inaugural Penn Relays. The Suffolk, Va., native finished fourth in his heat and eighth overall. Ricks’ time qualified him for the finals in the race tomorrow.
Action at the Penn Relays continues tomorrow for the Hokies beginning with the men’s pole vault at 2 p.m. Results will be available at hokiesports.com and at http://www.pennrelaysonline.com/Results/schedule.aspx.
