BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech track and field squads both achieved top-20 rankings in the first USTFCCCA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field polls, the coaches association announced on Tuesday.
The Hokie women are ranked 10th in the country and are the second-highest ranked ACC team, behind Florida State at No. 4. Senior Queen Harrison leads the squad with the nation’s top times in the 100-meter hurdles (12.65) and 400-meter hurdles (56.06), while sophomore Dorotea Habazin owns the second-best mark in the women’s hammer throw (212-04). Senior Kristi Castlin holds the third-best time in the 100-meter hurdles (13.01), and the Hokies’ 4x400-meter relay unit (3:33.15), consisting of Harrison, freshman Yvonne Amegashie, senior Asia Washington and sophomore Aunye Boone rank fifth in the U.S.
The Tech men sit in 16th nationally and also own the second-highest ranking among conference teams, behind Florida State, who resides in fifth in the country. Sophomore Marcel Lomnicky tossed the best mark in the nation at last weekend’s Florida Relays in the men’s hammer throw (245-06) to lead the squad. Senior Yavgeniy Olhovsky and junior Jared Jodon are tied in eighth place nationally in the pole vault (17-06.50).
The Hokies will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Sea Ray Relays this weekend as a tune up for the ACC Outdoor Championships on April 15-17 in Clemson, S.C. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
