ATLANTA, Ga. The Virginia Tech track and field squads’ sprinters continued their solid outdoor season at the Yellow Jacket Invite in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday, as Tech won three individual titles on the day.

The Hokies swept the short hurdles competitions as senior Queen Harrison and sophomore Keare Smith captured first place in the women’s 100-meter hurdles and men’s 110-meter hurdles, respectively. Harrison clocked a 13.10 en route to her second consecutive victory in the race, while Smith earned a time of 14.45 for the win on the men’s side.

Sophomore Ogechi Nwaneri added a third victory in the sprints on the day for Tech. Nwaneri took first in the women’s 100-meter dash with a time of 11.57, only two-hundredths of a second off of her personal best in the race of 11.59.

Senior Asia Washington showed her versatility as a runner in Atlanta. After winning the women’s 400-meter hurdles last weekend at the Miami Invitational, the Piscataway, N.J., native ran a 54.81 without the obstacles to finish second in the 400-meter dash on Saturday. Freshman Yvonne Amegashie placed fourth in the event with a time of 55.43.

In other sprints action, senior Kristi Castlin finished fourth in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, with a time of 1:01.98. Normally a short hurdler, Castlin introduced the longer hurdle race into her repertoire this season. Junior Ebenezer Amegashie earned a pair of fourth-place finishes in both the men’s 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles on the day. Amegashie timed in at 14.61 to join Smith in the top five of the 110-meter hurdles, and crossed the line in 54.71 in the 400-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Hasheem Halim put in a solid effort on the field side, claiming second in the men’s triple jump. Halim leaped 49-09.75 in his first competition of the outdoor season. Freshman David Wilson, who won the triple jump at the Miami Invite, placed fifth with a mark of 47-11.

Both the men’s and women’s squad performed well in the 4x100-meter relays. The quartet of Smith, freshman Jonathan McCants, Wilson and Amegashie combined for a time of 42.02 to finish runner-up on the men’s side. In the women’s race, Castlin, freshman Funmi Alabi, sophomore Aunye Boone and Nwaneri came in third with a time of 45.61.

The Hokies split up squads again next weekend as some Hokies will travel north for the Colonial Relays on April 2-3 in Williambsurg, Va., and some will venture south for the Florida Relays on April 2-3 in Gainesville, Fla.
