Hokies win four events to open up outdoor season
Harrison, Washington set meet records

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The sprinters for the Virginia Tech track and field squads captured four event titles and a school record at the Miami Invitational on Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla., to open up the outdoor season.

Fresh off her NCAA 60-meter hurdles championship, Harrison continued her winning ways with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles, while senior Kristi Castlin, who placed second in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA meet for her sixth All-America honor, took second in the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday. Harrison earned a meet-record time of 13.01, while Castlin clocked a 13.22.

Washington added another meet-record time in the 400-meter hurdles. The Piscataway, N.J., native, who redshirted the indoor season, timed in at 57.92 to win the event. Castlin finished second in the race with a time of 1:00.88.

On the men’s side, freshman David Wilson placed first in the triple jump. Wilson leaped 49-05.50 in the first outdoor competition of his career.

The women’s 4x400-meter relay squad captured the first relay title of the season for the Hokies. The quartet of senior Queen Harrison, senior Asia Washington, freshman Yvonne Amegashie and sophomore Aunye Boone ran a time of 3:41.19 to win the event.

Tech finished second in five other events at the meet, in addition to Castlin’s two runner-up showings. Castlin, freshman Funmi Alabi, Boone and freshman Ogechi Nwaneri sprinted a time of 45.37 in the 4x100-meter relay, and Nwaneri placed second in the women’s 100-meters with a time of 11.66. On the men’s side, junior Ebenezer Amegashie ran 53.39 in the 400-meter hurdles for second place, and the foursome of sophomore Keare Smith, freshman Jonathan McCants, Wilson and Amegashie placed second in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 41.71.

The Hokies will return to action next weekend at the Raleigh Relays, in Raleigh, N.C., on March 26-27, and the Weems Baskins Invitational in Columbia, S.C., on March 27. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
