Harrison and Ziegler honored by USTFCCCA
Jack named Men's Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year

BLACKSBURG, Va. Senior Queen Harrison, freshman Alexander Ziegler and Associate Head Men’s Track and Field Coach Greg Jack all won USTFCCCA Southeast Region awards for the Virginia Tech track and field squads, the coaches association announced on Tuesday.

Harrison won the Southeast Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year Award after continuing her stellar season at the ACC Championships. The Richmond, Va., native clocked a personal, school and ACC meet record time of 7.94 seconds in the women’s 60-meter hurdles to claim the first individual conference championship of her career. Later in the meet, Harrison broke her own school record in the 400-meters, sprinting a time of 53.06 en route to her second ACC championship of the weekend.

As a freshman, Ziegler shined at the ACC Championships to garner Southeast Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year honors. Ziegler captured the weight throw title at the meet with a personal-best throw of 73-10.25. The mark surpassed his previous NCAA automatic mark of 72-05.75, achieved at the VT Elite Meet. His toss currently ranks third in the nation heading into the NCAA meet.

Jack was named Southeast Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year, as he guided a men’s throws unit that tallied 33 of the Hokies’ 97 points at the ACC meet on the men’s side. In the weight throw alone, Tech scored 25 points. Along with the title-winner Ziegler, sophomore Marcel Lomnicky finished second, while freshman Denis Mahmic and senior Matej Muza placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the event. In the men’s shot put, senior Igor Misljenovic recorded his best conference showing ever, placing second with a career-best toss of 61-04.25 under Jack's tutelage.

Ten Hokies, including Harrison, Ziegler, Lomnicky and Misljenovic, will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 12-13. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
