Action begins at ACC Championships
  • ACC Golf Championship
  • Redmond third individually

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Matthias Treff opened the ACC Championships for the Virginia Tech track and field squads on Thursday at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va., and sits in ninth place in the heptathlon with 2,501 points after the first day of action.

Treff, the 2009 ACC champion in the javelin, is the first Hokie to compete in the heptathlon and performed well in his inaugural competition. The Burgthann, Germany native ran a 7.23 in the 60-meter hurdles and leaped 20-04.25 in the long jump portions to start the competition off.

In the shot put, due to Tommy John surgery Treff underwent in the summer, he was forced to throw the implement with his left hand and from a standing position. Even so, Treff launched a mark of 35-08.75, the seventh-best in the competition, to stay with the pack. He cleared 5-07.75 in the high jump to close out the first day of the heptathlon in ninth place. The 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meters portions of the heptathlon will be run on Friday.

Liane Weber of Clemson won the women’s pentathlon in the only other event on Thursday. No Hokies competed in the pentathlon. Events at the ACC Championships continue tomorrow and Saturday at the Rector Field House. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
