Newcomers shine at Penn State National
Amegashie, Wilson highlight final day of competition

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.The Virginia Tech track and field squads received several impressive performances from newcomers to finish competition at the Penn State National on Saturday in University Park, Pa.

Tech began with day with a strong effort in the women’s 400-meter dash. Freshman Yvonne Amegashie posted her best performance of the young season with a runner-up showing, clocking 55.79 in the race.

Freshman David Wilson continued his stellar rookie campaign. The Danville, Va., native jumped 51-01 to place third at the Penn State National, after winning the triple jump last weekend at the Hokie Invite with a NCAA provisional mark of 51-05. Sophomore Hasheem Halim also performed well in the event with a sixth-place finish, leaping 49-02.50.

In other field action, senior Lisa Birnbaum and junior Kelly Phillips tied for fifth place in the invitational section of the women’s pole vault. Both vaulters cleared 12-03.50 in the event.

Sophomore Ogechi Nwaneri and Funmi Alabi completed a successful meet with strong finishes in the invitational section of the women’s 200-meter dash. Nwaneri placed fourth with a time of 24.40, while Alabi took sixth, clocking 24.54. Alabi and Nwaneri also earned sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 60-meter dash last night.

Tech capped the meet with a second-place effort in the women’s 4x400-meter relay invitational section. The quartet of Amegashie, Alabi, Nwaneri and sophomore Aunye Boone crossed the line in 3:45.51.

The Hokies return home to Blacksburg to host the VT Elite Meet on Feb. 4-5 in the Rector Field House. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
