UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Senior Queen Harrison won her second straight 60-meter hurdle crown as the Virginia Tech track and field squads closed out the opening day of competition at the Penn State National in University Park, Pa., on Friday.

Seniors Queen Harrison and Kristi Castlin finished one-two in the 60-meter hurdles for the second consecutive week. Harrison, who clocked an NCAA automatic-qualifying 8.04 to capture the event title at the Hokie Invite on Jan. 22, ran an 8.10 to win the 60-meter hurdles at Penn State. Castlin, who also automatically qualified in the event last week, finished second with a time of 8.21.

Freshman Funmi Alabi continued to impress early on in her career. Alabi earned sixth in the women’s 60-meter dash, while sophomore Ogechi Nwaneri followed in seventh place. Alabi and Nwaneri posted times of 7.53 and 7.56, respectively.

In field action, junior Hunter Hall placed third in the invitational section of the men’s pole vault. Hall, who provisionally qualified last week at the Hokie Invitational, bettered his NCAA provisional mark by a foot, clearing 17-04.50 in the event. Junior Jared Jodon took seventh with a vault of 16-02.75. Former Hokie Brian Mondschein, competing unattached, won the event with a height of 18-00.50.

Events at the Penn State National continue tomorrow, beginning with the men’s heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. The first event featuring a Hokie is the women’s 400-meter dash at 10 a.m. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
