Hokies cap Virginia Tech Invite on Saturday
Washington, DeJarnette highlight second day of meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. The Virginia Tech track and field squads capped their opening meet, the Virginia Tech Invitational, on Saturday at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va., with several solid performances.

One day after breaking the school record, senior Asia Washington, competing unattached, took second in the 400-meter dash. Washington ran a strong first 200-meters, but could not hold off Ndonnia Rodrigues of South Carolina in the final turn. The Piscataway, N.J., native clocked a 54.94 in the race.

In her first collegiate competition, freshman Emma DeJarnette performed well, placing second in the unseeded section of the women’s pole vault. The Mechanicsville, Va., native cleared 12-01.50 in the event.

Junior Kelly Phillips and senior Lisa Birnbaum tied for seventh in the event with vaults of 12-00.50. In the pole vault, former Florida State athlete Lacy Jansen set a Rector Field House record with a vault of 15-3. The mark currently is the top mark in the world indoors.

The Hokies return to action next weekend with the Hokie Invitational, their second straight home meet. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
