The Notebook

MOSCOW, Russia – Competing for the Slovak national team, Marcel Lomnicky, a former member of the Virginia Tech men’s track and field team, finished eighth in the hammer throw with a heave of 77.57 meters (254’ 6”) at the World Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia.

A six-time All-America selection, Lomnicky was a two-time NCAA champion for the Hokies in the hammer throw in 2009 and the 35 lb. weight throw in 2012.

Lomnicky was also named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011.

Despite several accomplished throwers coming through the program after his departure from Tech, Lomnicky still holds the Virginia Tech record in the hammer throw with a mark of 248’ 10” set in 2011.
