Women's track and field moves into top 10

The Virginia Tech women’s track and field squad moved up two places in the latest USTFCCCA Outdoor National Team rankings, jumping from 11th to ninth, while the men’s squad stayed put at No. 18 in the nation, the coaches association announced on Wednesday.

The Hokie men came in second place at last week’s ACC Outdoor Championships with 130 points. Senior Marcel Lomnicky set the ACC-Meet record en route to the men’s hammer throw title, tossing a mark of 235 feet, 7 inches. Senior Igor Misljenovic won the discus throw, senior Yavgeniy Olhovsky captured the pole vault title and sophomore Will Mulherin crossed the line in first in the 5,000 meters to round out the Hokie men’s team’s string of champions.

On the women’s side, senior Queen Harrison took first in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the conference meet. Harrison clocked a wind-aided 12.44 in the 100-meter hurdles, and broke a meet and facility record with a time of 54.66 in the 400-meter hurdles. The women’s squad placed sixth with 56 points overall.

The Hokies will split up this weekend, competing in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 22-24 and the Vertklasse Meet in High Point, N.C., on April 25. Results will be available on hokiesports.com. Full team rankings can be found at http://www.ustfccca.org/rankings/division-i-rankings.
