Responsibilities: Gabbard is in charge of new construction and maintenance of Tech’s athletics facilities, and he also supervises Tech’s facilities managers and game operations people. In addition, he serves as the sport administrator for men’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf.
Gabbard has overseen a facilities boom since arriving at Tech. The list of projects includes the south and west side additions to Lane Stadium, the building of the Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Facility, the renovations to English Field, the building of a new hitting facility for the baseball program and renovations and upgrades to Cassell Coliseum. He is overseeing the construction of Tech’s new $21 million indoor practice facility, which is scheduled to be completed July 1, 2015.
More than $220 million of facilities upgrades have either been completed or planned since Gabbard and AD Jim Weaver arrived at Virginia Tech.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Gabbard served as the assistant athletics director for administration at UNLV (1996-1998) and the director of administration at UNLV (1992-96).

Of Note: Gabbard directed the men’s national golf championship held at the Homestead in 2004 and the 2011 NCAA Golf East Regional held at the Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech. He also coordinated several Atlantic 10 Tennis Championships and two NCAA tennis regionals held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. In addition, he has coordinated several ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Rector Field House, including the 2013 Championships.
Gabbard was instrumental in several major facilities projects at UNLV, including the construction of the Lied Athletic Complex, Wilson Baseball Stadium, Fertitta Tennis Complex and the Redd Basketball Offices. Gabbard came into athletics because of his experience with building construction. He had a 20-year real estate career in Florida before joining Jim Weaver's staff at UNLV.
Gabbard is a Vietnam veteran (1970-71) who achieved the rank of first lieutenant in the U.S. Army's artillery branch.
Personal: A native of Lexington, Ky., Gabbard and his wife, Nancy, live in Blacksburg. They have two children, Eric and Cyndi (Krupa), and four grandchildren.
