William Davis, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, enters his second season as assistant coach with the Virginia Tech women’s tennis program.
In only his first season as assistant coach at Tech, he helped maneuvered the Hokies through a competitive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schedule, upsetting then-No. 25 N.C. State by a score of 4-3 on April 15. Tech lost the doubles point, but won four matches in singles play to claim the come-from-behind victory over the Wolfpack in Blacksburg. Individually, Francesca Fusinato ended her career as the ITA Senior Player of the Year for the Atlantic Region, while Natalie Novotna capped her freshman campaign with ITA Player to Watch honors. The Hokie duo of Fusinato and Novotna also received All-ACC Third Team recognition.
Prior to his time at Virginia Tech, Davis served as the men’s tennis assistant coach at Washington and Lee University for two seasons. While at Washington and Lee, Davis was responsible for conditioning workouts and recruiting as well as helping plan and run practice for the men’s tennis squad. In addition to those roles, Davis also served as the assistant director of the Duchossois Tennis Center as well as a physical education instructor.
Throughout his two-year tenure with the Generals, Davis helped coach one Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Player of the Year, two ODAC Rookie Players of the Year, 12 All-ODAC First-Team honorees and six Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Men’s Tennis All-State student-athletes. Academically, Davis supported one Capital One Division III Academic All-America nominee, 18 ODAC All-Academic First-Team honorees and two valedictorians.
Prior to his coaching career, Davis was a four-year letterwinner at Michigan State. He guided the team to a 75-62 record over a five-year period, notching a 51-47 singles record and a 30-28 doubles mark. Davis was voted captain his senior year, graduating from Michigan State in 2014 with a bachelor of arts degree.
Of note, Davis also is a member of the Professional Tennis Association.
