ATLANTA - Junior Caitlyn Nolan went 2 for 3 with a home run and senior Caroline Schoenewald went 1 for 2 with two walks and two stolen bases in Virginia Tech’s 3-2 loss in the series opener to Georgia Tech on Friday evening.
Schoenewald’s two stolen bases are a new single-game high and she now has a team-best 14 stolen bases on the season. Nolan now has six multi-hit games and four home runs this season, a new career-high. Eberle took the loss for the Hokies (20-28, 6-15 ACC) despite allowing four hits in a complete game effort.
Schoenewald led off the game with an infield single before stealing her 13th base of the season with junior Olivia Lattin at the plate. After Lattin advanced Schoenewald to third on a sacrifice bunt, Strouth hit tapper back to the pitcher but the throw was muffed by the first baseman. The error allowed Schoenewald to score and it gave Tech an early 1-0 lead.
After the Yellow Jackets (26-22, 11-8 ACC) hit a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, Nolan stepped to the plate with one out in the top of the sixth and ripped the first pitch she saw over the left field wall that tied the game up at 2-2. The tie wouldn’t last for long though as the Jackets plated the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly that made it 3-2.
With one out in the top of the seventh, pinch hitter Hannah Jones dropped a double down the left field line, her third of the season. Eberle then drew a two out walk that gave the Hokies two runners on but a long fly ball to left off the bat of Sierra Walton was caught on the warning track, stifling the Tech rally.
Game two of the three-game series between the Hokies and the Yellow Jackets will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m.
