BLACKSBURG - Despite a seventh inning rally, Virginia Tech couldn’t salvage the final game of its three-game series with No. 15 Florida State on Sunday at the Hokies fell to the Seminoles, 6-2, in Tallahassee.
Junior Sierra Walton went 2 for 3 with an RBI single and senior Caroline Schoenewald went 1 for 3 to go 5 for 9 on the weekend for the Hokies (11-15, 1-5 ACC).
With the Hokies trailing 6-0 entering the seventh inning, sophomore Carrie Eberle led off with a single up the middle. She was replaced at first by pinch runner Kinsey Johnson who moved to third after sophomore Hannah Jones rocketed a double to center field.
With Walton at the plate, a wild pitch scored Johnson from third and advanced Jones to third. Walton came through with a single to left the allowed Jones to score easily from third, cutting the Hokies’ deficit to 6-2. The next three batters would be retired in order, though, stifling a potential comeback.
Eberle, who had held the Seminoles to three hits and two runs, both unearned, in the first game, got the start for the Hokies in the circle and didn’t allow a hit through the first two innings. In the third, Florida State struck first on an RBI fielder’s choice and an RBI groundout, giving themselves a 2-0 lead. The Seminoles’ four runs in the fifth that extended their lead to 6-0 proved to be the difference maker in the win.
The Hokies return to action on Wednesday as they take on James Madison in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Tech Softball Park.
