No. 15 Florida State gets by Hokies, 2-0

Eberle tosses a complete game and doesn't allow an earned run in game one

BLACKSBURG - Despite another impressive performance in the circle from sophomore Carrie Eberle, Virginia Tech couldn’t get anything going offensively as the Hokies fell in their first game of the weekend against No. 15 Florida State, 2-0, on Friday evening.

Eberle struck out five and didn’t allow an earned run in her ninth complete game of the season. Senior Caroline Schoenewald picked up her third multi-hit game of the season for the Hokies (11-13, 1-3 ACC).

Junior Caitlyn Nolan worked a two out walk in the top of the second for the Hokies first base runner of the game but she wouldn’t advance. Eberle responded by retiring the Seminoles in order in the bottom of the second.

After Eberle worked out of a game in the bottom of the third, Schoenewald registered Tech’s first base hit of the game with one out in the top of the fourth on a single up the middle. She then stole second, her fifth of the season, before Eberle worked a two out walk that put two runners on. It was the Hokies’ best scoring chance of the game and they couldn’t get a run home.

Eberle struck out the final batter of the fourth with two runners in scoring position but she wouldn’t be able to keep the dangerous Seminoles quiet for long. After an error that allowed the lead off runner to reach, Eberle recorded the next two outs but a two-run home run followed, giving Florida State a 2-0 lead.

The Hokies would put runners on in the sixth and seventh but couldn't get a run across.

Tech will be back at it tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the Seminoles in game two of the three game series.
