Eberle, Strouth lead Hokies to 2-1 win over Syracuse
Tech salvages the final game of a three-game set with the Orange

BLACKSBURG - Sophomore Carrie Eberle allowed only one run in a complete game effort and junior Emma Strouth connected on her second home run of the season in Virginia Tech’s 2-1 win over Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.
Eberle retired the final six batters she faced to earn her fourth win of the season for the Hokies (11-12, 1-2 ACC). Her ERA for the year is down to 1.19 and she’s gone the distance in eight of her 10 starts. Strouth now has 12 home runs for her career while junior Kinsey Johnson, who scored the go-ahead run as a pinch runner in the bottom of the fifth, has crossed the plate five times this season.
Leading off the bottom of the second in a scoreless game, Strouth turned on the second pitch of the at bat and hooked it around the left field foul pole to give the Hokies their first lead of the series.
Syracuse threatened in the top half of the third trailing 1-0 but Eberle ended the inning herself on a comebacker back to the circle. Virginia Tech was clinging onto a 1-0 lead entering the top of fifth where the Orange tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single up the middle.
The Hokies responded in the bottom half of the fifth that was started by a lead off walk drawn by junior Caitlyn Nolan. Johnson came in as the pinch runner and moved from first to third after a sac bunt put down by senior Breanna Davenport was fielded and thrown away into right field by the pitcher.
With one out, runners on the corners and freshman Sammi Miller at the plate, Syracuse’s Alexa Romero, who no-hit the Hokies yesterday, threw a wild pitch to the backstop that allowed Johnson to score from third, giving Tech a 2-1 lead.
The one run lead was all Eberle needed as she got three quick outs on four pitches in the sixth and three groundouts in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
The Hokies return to action next weekend when they travel to Tallahassee to take on No. 15 Florida State for a three-game series.
