Hokies drop ACC opening doubleheader to Syracuse
Tech will wrap up its series with the Orange tomorrow at 12 p.m.

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped its ACC opening games to Syracuse as the Hokies fell 2-0 and 8-1 in the first and second games of a doubleheader on Friday at Tech Softball Park.
Sophomore Carrie Eberle allowed only two runs on two hits and posted seven strikeouts in the first game for the Hokies (10-12, 0-2 ACC) but was outdueled by Syracuse’s Alexa Romero, who tossed a no-hitter. Junior Emma Strouth went 2 for 6 with a run scored and registered two outfield assists over the two games.
SYRACUSE 2, VIRGINIA TECH 0
Eberle retired six of the first seven batters she faced while Romero sat down the first six Hokies that stepped to the plate.
The Orange got on the board in the top of the third on a two RBI double down the left field line that gave them a 2-0 lead but Eberle picked up a strikeout that ended the inning.
The next nine Syracuse batters between the fourth and sixth innings were retired by Eberle as she only allowed one base runner to reach after the RBI double. The Hokies put runners on in the bottom of fifth and bottom of the seventh but weren’t able to cash in.
SYRACUSE 8, VIRGINIA TECH 1
With one out and the Hokies trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Strouth reached on an infield single to the shortstop. Senior Caroline Schoenewald was the next batter and hit a sharp grounder that backhanded by the third baseman but thrown away at first base.
Strouth reached third and took a wide turn when she saw the ball get away on the throw to third from the right fielder. She scored on the error, cutting Tech’s deficit to two, 3-1.
It wouldn’t be enough though as the Orange pushed across a run in the fifth and four in the sixth that made it an 8-1 game. Tech’s best scoring chance came in the bottom of the sixth when Strouth singled with one out and reached second on an error by the second baseman covering on the force out after Schoenewald hit a grounder to short. With two on, senior Jessie Mehr walked to load the bases. Romero then came on in relief and continued her dominance over the Hokies, striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
The Hokies will close out their series with Syracuse tomorrow at 12 p.m.
