Davenport earns NFCA all-region honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior Breanna Davenport will add another another postseason accolade this offseason as the Hokies’ designated player has been named second-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday.

The honor from the NFCA is the second of Davenport’s career after picking up third-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors as a true freshman. On May 11, Davenport was tabbed second-team All-ACC by the league’s coaches after she hit .408 with four home runs, 17 runs scored and 11 RBI in conference play.

NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, with an emphasis placed on a player's performances against opponents ranked in the top 75 of the RPI. Davenport hit .369 in 22 games against teams in the RPI top 75, with a .662 slugging percentage and a .423 on-base percentage. The Statesville, North Carolina native also racked up four doubles, five home runs, 12 RBI and scored 12 runs in those games.

In the first game of a doubleheader against Louisville on April 14, Davenport went 5-for-5 with two RBI, marking only the third five-hit game in program history and the first since 2006. Her other notable performances against top-75 RPI teams include a 3-for-4, three-RBI showing against James Madison and a three-RBI, three-run game that led the Hokies to a 13-4 run-rule victory over North Carolina on March 19.

The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions with first, second and third team selections. All the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2017 NFCA Division I All-American squads.
