SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Seniors Vanessa Gonzalez and Elizabeth Birle both registered hits in their final collegiate games but the Virginia Tech softball team couldn’t get by Syracuse in the regular season finale as the Orange (30-18, 9-10 ACC) topped the Hokies (19-34, 5-19 ACC), 6-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Gonzalez tallied an RBI and a stolen base while Birle stepped up and tossed 3.1 innings of relief after throwing her first complete game yesterday. Sophomore Kinsey Johnson chipped in with a double and a walk.

After the Orange pushed a run across in the bottom of the second, junior Jessie Mehr reached on an error by the third baseman to lead off the top of the third. Johnson followed with a walk before freshman Dani Hugney moved both runners into scoring position on a groundout. With two outs, Gonzalez chopped an RBI single to the shortstop that tied the game up at 1-1.

Despite knotting up the score, the Orange used a four-run home half of the third to jump out to a commanding 5-1 lead. The Hokies produced base runners in every inning after the third but the opportunities did not lead to any runs.

Gonzalez finishes her career tied for fifth in program history with 26 career home runs and sixth all-time with 89 career walks. Birle came on in the latter half of the season to throw some key innings for the Hokies in the circle. This week, she was a part of her first career shutout against Western Carolina and she threw her first career complete game against the Orange on Saturday.
