Davenport ties school record but Hokies fall to Louisville in doubleheader

BLACKSBURG – Despite junior Breanna Davenport going 6-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored over two games, the Virginia Tech softball team couldn’t get by Louisville as the Cardinals topped the Hokies in a doubleheader on Friday evening. The Cardinals (24-13, 8-4 ACC) defeated the Hokies (16-26, 5-15 ACC) 13-6 in game one and 6-0 in game two.
The final game of the three game series is now scheduled for tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. due to poor weather in the forecast.
Davenport became only the third player in program history to tally five hits in a game after going 5-for-5 in the first game. She now shares the program record with Kelly Brown and Shanel Garofalo. Brown had five against UNCG on Feb. 19, 2006 while Garofalo set the record on March 30, 2002 against Radford
Sophomore Olivia Lattin’s eight assists at second base in the night cap was one shy of matching the program record of nine.
GAME ONE
A sloppy first inning for the Hokies defensively allowed Louisville to jump out to a 3-0 lead but Tech responded in the bottom half of the second. With two on and two out, Lattin singled to left field that scored freshman Hannah Jones from second for the Hokies first run.
A grounder from junior Caroline Schoenewald back to the pitcher was thrown away and allowed two more runs to score that made it 3-3. Davenport then stepped to the dish and drove in the go-ahead run in Schonenewald that put the Hokies in front, 4-3.
The Cardinals got the lead back thanks to another crooked number in the fourth inning but an RBI triple off the bat of sophomore Emma Strouth, her team-best fourth of the season, cut the Hokie deficit to four, 9-5. Davenport made it a four run game again, 10-6, on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth but Louisville couldn’t be kept off the scoreboard as they cruised to a 13-6 win.
GAME TWO
The Hokies found themselves in an early hole after the top of the first and despite putting two runners on in the home half couldn’t get a run across.
The Tech bats were kept off-balance all night despite putting runners on in six of seven innings. Perhaps the Hokies’ best scoring opportunity of the night came in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back singles from Schoenewald and Lattin. With Schoenewald at third and one out, Davenport lifted a fly ball that was caught by the centerfielder, who then delivered a strike at home that nabbed Schoenewald to end the inning.
