BLACKSBURG – Despite racking up seven hits, including two doubles from senior Vanessa Gonzalez, the Virginia Tech softball team didn’t have an answer for North Carolina starter Brittany Pickett as the Hokies (10-12, 2-5 ACC) dropped the season opener to the Tar Heels (23-5, 4-0 ACC), 6-2, on Friday afternoon.
Starter Aysha Richardson (1-4) took the loss for the Hokies after tossing 4.1 innings in the circle, including three scoreless frames to start off the game.
Davenport has hit a home run in each of the last three games for Tech and now has four on the season. Gonzalez has hit two doubles in a game twice this season with the first time coming on March 4 at Virginia. She now has four multi-hit games this season and 32 for her career.
The Heels struck first in the top of the fourth and went up 2-0 before Davenport’s solo bomb over the scoreboard in the home half made it a 2-1 game. UNC posted a crooked number in the top half of the fifth to push their lead to 5-1 but the Hokies made it a three-run game again after junior Jessie Mehr was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Tech went down quietly in the bottom of the sixth and an RBI double for the Tar Heels in the seventh made it 6-2 and put the game out of reach.
Game two of the three-game series between the Hokies and Heels starts tomorrow at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
