Hokies drop Friday doubleheader to No. 1 Florida State
Tech turns first triple play in program history in game one of the twin bill

BLACKSBURG – Despite a two home run day from junior Breanna Davenport in the second game and a turned triple play in the first, the Virginia Tech softball team fell to No. 1 Florida State in both games of a Friday doubleheader at Tech Softball Park.
The Seminoles (21-1-1, 5-0 ACC), who is the first top ranked team to play at TSP, took game No. 1, 12-3, and the second game, 13-2. Senior Aysha Richardson went 2-for-2 and reached base in all three plate appearances in the first game for the Hokies (10-10, 2-3 ACC). Davenport’s two round trippers in game No. 2 set a new career single game high.
GAME ONE
With the Hokies looking to get out of a jam with runners on first and second and no one out in the top of the fourth, FSU’s Ellie Cooper grounded to sophomore Caitlyn Nolan at short who stepped on second for the first out. As the ball was thrown back to the pitcher Olivia Lattin, Cooper broke for second and was eventually thrown out at first by Nolan for the second out. Junior first baseman Jessie Mehr converted the triple play by cutting the runner down at home. It was first triple play turned in program history and it was the first triple play in any game involving the Hokies
Tech fell behind early in the first game of the twin bill but showed signs of life in the bottom of the fifth. Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Whitcomb led off with her third double of the season and was sent home on another double, this time off the bat of senior Vanessa Gonzalez, to make it a 12-1 game.
Richardson followed with the third-straight Tech double that plated Gonzalez to make it 12-2. Lattin made it a 12-3 game on her fifth double of the season down the left field line that scored Richardson. It was all the Hokies could muster though as the Seminoles got a groundout and a lineout double play to end it.
GAME TWO
The Seminoles again jumped out to an early lead but Davenport got the Hokies on the board in the bottom of the second with her second home run of the season over the right field fence. It served as the first Tech home run hit at Tech Softball Park this season.
Davenport struck again in the bottom of the fourth with her career-best second home run of the game, this time against reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year Jessica Burroughs. Despite the offensive spark provided by Davenport the Hokies couldn’t make run at the three-time defending ACC champions.
The Hokies will wrap up its three game series with Florida State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
