Gonzalez named ACC Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior outfielder Vanessa Gonzalez has been named ACC Player of the Week after hitting .667 (8-for-12) with two home runs, three doubles and six RBI for the Virginia Tech softball team this past weekend in their conference opening series at Virginia. It’s the first career ACC weekly honor for the senior from Torrance, California.

Gonzalez slugged 1.417, had a .714 on-base percentage and struck out only once in 14 plate appearances in a 2-1 weekend for the Hokies. She registered two multi-hit games and two-multi RBI games hitting out of the lead-off spot.

Gonzalez hit the game-clinching three-run home run in the top of the sixth of the series opener that gave the Hokies a 13-5 lead and put the run rule in effect. She set a new career-high that evening with four hits and also scored three runs.

In the second game, she drove in two runs on her second double of the game to give Tech a 7-4 lead in the top of the fifth. Gonzalez also hit a solo home run on the very first pitch of the game that set the tone for the Hokies’ 5-1 series-clinching win on Sunday.

The Hokies (10-6, 2-1 ACC) are back in action on the road today at 6 p.m. against Costal Carolina. They’ll conclude their five-game road trip tomorrow at 6 p.m. against South Carolina.
